Walking East. Hamish Fulton
OPENING MARCH 24 - 8:00 PM following the artist's masterclass
MARCH 24 - AUGUST 28
Walking Eastby Hamish Fulton is a co-production between the Galician center CGAC (Santiago de Compostela) and the University of Navarra Museum (Pamplona). Curator Pep Benlloch.
The exhibition showcases the project undertaken by Fulton, "the walking artist," for the occasion: a journey along the Camino starting from Finisterre, heading towards Santiago de Compostela, and continuing on to Pamplona and Roncesvalles, until reaching Hendaye.
All of the artist's work stems from walking alone. Fulton does not interfere with the landscape; he travels through it with the attentive gaze of someone who truly and actively sees everything around him.
The exhibition aims to provide an insight into his concerns, which have changed over the years and are now largely focused on preserving the planet. Through art, he hopes to contribute to the conservation of the planet.
Since 1969, the artist has been walking in different parts of the world. The Iberian Peninsula, Canada, parts of Europe, Australia, and Nepal have welcomed Fulton's walks. The artist uses images, text (together or separately), wood, collage, and drawing to show his walks and convey the journey. In this way, physical activity is transformed into material, into works of art, which convey his vision through these diverse languages.
Concerned about the exploitation of the environment and landscape, Fulton champions the atavistic act, the direct experience of the walker, as a tool for saving humanity, which has stopped seeing in order to look around itself through technology.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors will be able to see the artist's different media, as they complement and fit together to offer a complete vision of what walking is, of its meaning, which is reflected through the works. Viewers are invited to reconstruct the space evoked and the artist's journey. Regarding his works, Fulton speaks of mental sculpture in the sense that, like sculptures, they refer to notions of space, time, and matter.
BIOGRAPHY
“I am an artist who walks, not a walker who makes art.”

Hamish Fulton, born in 1946 in London (England), lives and works in Canterbury. He trained at Hammersmith College of Art, St. Martin’s School of Art, and the RCA Royal College of Art, among other prestigious institutions. Since the early 1970s, he has traveled the world on foot, covering 24 countries, hundreds of kilometers, and several thousand steps. For him, walking is fundamental; ephemeral walking is a work of art. Fulton's work differs from American Land Art in its softness, intimacy, and great economy of means. He photographs the landscape without intervention or artifice. |

All the artist's work is born from walking alone. Fulton does not intervene in the landscape; he walks through it with the attentive gaze of someone who truly and actively sees what surrounds him.
The exhibition aims to provide an overview of his concerns, which have clearly changed over the years and currently focus particularly on the conservation of the planet. It is through art that he wishes to contribute to the conservation of the planet.
Since 1969, the artist has been taking walks through various corners of the world. The Iberian Peninsula, Canada, different corners of Europe, Australia, and Nepal have been part of Fulton's journey. The artist uses images, text (together or separately), wood, collage, and drawing to depict the journey and convey it. In this way, physical activity is transformed into matter, into art pieces that convey his vision using these different languages.
Concerned about the instrumentalization of the environment or the landscape, Fulton vindicates the atavistic act, the direct experience of the walker as a tool for the salvation of a humanity that has stopped seeing to look around through technology.
The viewer is invited to reconstruct the evoked space and the artist's journey. About his works, Fulton refers to mental sculptures in the sense that they are named, figurative sculptures, to notions of space, time, and matter. In this exhibition, visitors will be able to see the different media used by the artist, since all of them complement and fit together to offer a complete vision of what walking is, of its meaning, which is reflected through Fulton's works.
