Seville Baroque Orchestra. Brandenburg Concertos
The Seville Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Pedro Gandía Martín, performs Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 3, 5, and 6 and Suite No. 2 by Johann Sebastian Bach. The OBS is considered one of Spain's leading ensembles dedicated to the performance of early music using historicist criteria.
“Dizzying tempos undertaken with astonishing transparency in collusion with delicate textures, an exciting combination of rich instrumentation, delightful ornamentation, raw expressiveness in the slow passages... Simply an extraordinary Bach in its brilliance and depth. The flagship of its country, the audience rose to its feet to applaud the OBS with ovations.”

PROGRAM
Johann Sebastian Bach Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 3, 5, and 6
Suite No. 2
As in other areas of his catalog, Bach incorporated the two leading national styles of his time, Italian and French, into his orchestral music. The concertos were derived from the former; the suites from the latter. Both the Brandenburg Concertos and the Suite-Overtures date from the Cöthen period (1717-23), although the composer returned to them in Leipzig, reworking the four suites. The second is built on concertante principles, due to the presence of the solo flute, but its structure is characteristic of the genre: a broad French-style overture followed by a succession of dances. The Brandenburg Concertos, on the other hand, have a tripartite structure and combine the principles of the concerto grosso with those of the concerto with soloist.
