Excuse Me. Salvador Sobral

Salvador Sobral opens the Museum's performing arts and music season with a concert in which the singer will take the audience on a journey through jazz, bossa nova, and the melodic sounds of Latin America.

SALVADOR SOBRAL

 

Portuguese singer and songwriter, born in Lisbon on December 28, 1989. He studied Psychology at the Higher Institute of Applied Psychology in Lisbon, but his passion for music revealed him to be one of the great promises of the Portuguese and Spanish music scene.

During his time living in the United States and Barcelona, Salvador Sobral developed several musical projects, including his participation in the indie-pop band "Noko Woi." The group's debut album earned them an invitation to perform at the 2014 edition of the Sónar Festival in Barcelona.

With "Amar pelos dois," he won the 2017 Portuguese Song Festival, becoming Portugal's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest. Sobral received the highest score in the history of the European contest, becoming the first Portuguese representative to win Eurovision.

In January 2018, he received the EBBA Award for Best Emerging Artist in the Netherlands. He was also voted "Culture Personality of 2017" by EURONEWS viewers.

 

EXCUSE ME

 

Excuse Me is the first studio album by Portuguese singer Salvador Sobral. It was released on August 2, 2016, reaching number 1 on the Portuguese album chart in May 2017, following Sobral's victory at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. The album includes the singles "Excuse Me" and "Nem Eu," the latter being a cover of a 1952 song of the same name by Brazilian samba singer and composer Dorival Caymmi.

The album was co-produced by pianist Júlio Resende, Venezuelan composer Leonardo Aldrey, and Salvador himself.

JÚLIO RESENDE

He trained in classical music, but his interest in improvisation led him to study jazz. A Portuguese musician, pianist, and composer, he participated in several workshops where he worked with the best teachers at the Hot Clube, New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Berklee College of Music, and the Bill Evans Academy.

     
 

ANDRÉ ROSINHA

Self-taught, he began playing the electric bass until he started his musical studies at the Musicland School of Music. He later enrolled at the National Conservatory School of Music, where he began studying double bass. He has participated in seminars and masterclasses with Dave Holland, Matt Penmann, Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, Greg Hutchinson, among others.

     
 

BRUNO PEDROSO

After receiving instruction from established musicians on the Portuguese scene, he attended the Academia de Amadores de Música and the Escola de Jazz do Hot Clube de Portugal. He studied in New York with Leon Parker, Carl Allen, Jordi Rossy, Adam Nussbaum, and Billy Hart. In 1995, he joined the teaching staff at the Escola de Jazz do Hot Clube de Portugal. Gifted with outstanding versatility and musicality, Bruno is one of the most sought-after Portuguese jazz musicians.
