HISTORY OF THE MUSICAL
In the strike, known as the 'Newsboy Strike of 1899', young newspaper delivery boy Kid Blink led a gang of orphan newsies in a fight against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other powerful publishers.
His story inspired a movie calledNEWSIES, which became a cult phenomenon after its release in 1992.
Its popularity grew suddenly, and its fans managed to get it released on video and DVD. But they had to wait 20 years until 2011 for the musical version to be released with regional performance permission.
This stage production aroused great interest in the media and among the public. Fans of the film and audiences discovering it for the first time ensured that the show made it to Broadway in March 2012, with the intention of running for a limited season of 101 performances. Its success meant that it was performed 1,004 times before going on tour. In 2017, after completing its North American tour, the musical was recorded for inclusion in the Netflix catalog.
It was in 2022, at the Acunsa Theater of the University of Navarra Museum, when for the first time a group of young students recaptured the combative spirit and theatrical vigor of a timeless story that continues to stir passions.
