Public works projects. Juan Ugalde

Throughout his extensive artistic career, Juan Ugalde has frequently used photography and collage as means to add new meanings to his pictorial work. Public Works Projects is his latest series, based on photographs from the University of Navarra Museum collection dedicated to this theme: the construction of bridges, roads, and lighthouses, documented by 19th-century photographers as evidence of the country's development. Enlarged and mounted on canvas, the historical photographs are thus integrated into Ugalde's pictorial work, which adds abstract strokes, small characters, or anachronistic elements, adding a note of criticism or humor to the purely documentary reading of these photographs. This exhibition presents for the first time thirty new works by Ugalde, created as part of the Tender Puentes program.
