Photography is often understood as a window onto reality. However, the boundaries between reality and fiction have been blurred since its inception.
In a world saturated with images, where the possibilities and speed of their production are increasing, there is a growing need to understand the codes of images and the mechanisms behind their construction. What kind of access to reality does the photographic image constitute?
Possible constellations. The image as a fragment of reality in the MUN collection highlights the infinite number of possible points of view in photography, as well as the multiplicity of visual narratives that shape our imaginations, seeking to achieve a more conscious view of our relationship with photographs and their various modes of construction.
The selected images span the history of the medium from its beginnings in the 19th century, with the oldest work in the exhibition dating from 1851, to the present day, with works created in 2018. In total, more than one hundred pieces make up the exhibition, belonging to a wide variety of artistic movements, techniques, authors, and themes in keeping with the nature of the MUN's photographic collection. Some of the photographers featured in the exhibition are Charles Clifford, Gustave de Beaucorps, José Ortiz Echagüe, Juan Dolcet Santos, Bleda y Rosa, and Joan Fontcuberta.
When viewed together, the images in Possible Constellations explore the ambiguity inherent in photography and invite viewers to reflect on the different relationships between image, referent, and referenced; between reality, truth, and verisimilitude. The exhibition offers a discourse that seeks to highlight the polyphony that makes up visual culture, as well as the role of the viewer in clarifying what is real in photography.
