Stillness and movement, calm and tension, the hidden and the revealed, doing and being done coexist in the scenes that make up Jungle.

This choreographic work reflects the opposites we face in our daily lives, making us reflect on the weight and depth of our existence. The choreographic language of the work is based on movement research developed by Kim Sungyong, the company's artistic director. Through it, the dancers awaken their concrete senses to jointly find answers that create changes and expansions in movement. Jungle features musical direction by Marihiko Hara, a Japanese sound artist and composer; lighting design by Lee Jungyoon, characterized by a youthful and sophisticated sensibility; and costume design by Bae Kyongsool. For his part, set designer You Jaehun integrates performance, architecture, technology, and art in this collaboration with choreographer Kim Sungyong.

KIM SUNGYONG

Kim Sungyong began dancing at the age of 15. In 1997, at the age of 20, he was the youngest winner of the Gold Prize at the Dong-A Dance Competition and the first Korean to win an award at the Japan International Ballet and Modern Dance Competition in Nagoya. He has presented more than 100 choreographic works on national and international stages and has received numerous awards and recognitions. In addition, as director of the Daegu Contemporary Dance Company, he brought a new vibe to the organization as a young leader in his 40s.

Kim Sungyong hopes to promote Korean contemporary dance worldwide thanks to his young and creative leadership based on his extensive experience and knowledge.

KOREA NATIONAL CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY

Founded in 2010, KNCDC is Korea's only national contemporary dance company. KNCDC aspires to create Korean contemporary dance that tells stories about history, society, and contemporary daily life that can be appreciated in all regions and by all generations. In May 2023, choreographer Kim Sungyong joined the company as KNCDC's fifth artistic director.

KNCDC is establishing its identity as a company committed to new creation and contemporary dance. KNCDC produces new works by inviting choreographers with highly distinctive artistic directions and selecting the most suitable dancers for each project. Furthermore, by protecting the rights of artists, KNCDC allows them to freely express their individuality within the stable system of the dance company.

KNCDC promotes the best environment for dance by serving as a platform where artists and audiences meet and grow together. KNCDC fosters an ecosystem where diverse values coexist and helps enrich the lives of citizens through their experiences with dance in their daily lives.
