Coda in Motion. February 10

First session of Coda en Movimiento, the dance series at the University of Navarra Museum, curated by Roger Salas.

Dubstep dance performer Marquese Scott will open the first session with a live performance. Roger Salas will then present all the shows in the series, and the first session will close with a screening of West Side Story (1961), directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins.

ROGER SALAS

Born in Holguín (Cuba) in 1950, he has been the dance and ballet critic for the newspaper El País for 28 years. As a critic and chronicler, he has been an enlightened witness to the most important events in the field worldwide, awarded and recognized by the ballet profession in the most demanding performance forums, from the Venice Biennale to the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and La Scala in Milan. His lectures have reached the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

In addition to giving lectures in different parts of the world, he is the author of numerous books and articles on dance and ballet. 

 

MARQUESE SCOTT

Dance Performer born in 1981 in Englewood, California, dances dubstep, a type of music that originated in London. His choreography incorporates elements of reverse movement, pupping, and tutting.

Marquese plays with these elements and creates his own transitions, which are translated into a performance that is recorded on video, forming an additional audiovisual piece. The locations are chosen uniquely, with the backgrounds carefully selected.

He has performed in numerous countries, including Singapore, Germany, France, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and China.

 

WEST SIDE STORY, 1961

A classic musical and winner of the Oscar for Best Picture in 1961, West Side Story is inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and tells the love story of Maria, sister of the leader of the Puerto Rican gang the Sharks, and Tony, a former member of the Jets, rivals of the Sharks.

Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, it stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, and Russ Tamblyn in the leading roles. The music was composed by Leonard Bernstein.

The feature film won 10 Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Music and Sound, and Best Cinematography, Editing, and Costume Design.
