THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition" : Beauty and the Sacred, " co-produced in collaboration between the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the University of Navarra Museum, and the Museum of Navarra, is the first retrospective of the Navarran painter Isabel Baquedano (Mendavia, 1929–Madrid, 2018), one of the most distinctive artists in Spanish painting in the second half of the 20th century. A preeminent figure in what is known asthe Pamplona School( ) and a painting teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts in that city, Baquedano was a mentor to many of Navarre's contemporary painters. Starting from a realistic aesthetic, the artist evolved in her work, absorbing the different trends of her time, within her general interest in art history, but interpreting them in a personal way, always driven by her desire to learn and enjoy the painting process rather than the final result, without caring about recognition or fame. Her work covers a wide range of themes, from those with a clear social component in her early periods, to those linked to the classical world or sacred history in her final period, as well as others linked to symbolic aesthetics, urban landscapes, or her everyday environment.

THE ARTIST

ISABEL BAQUEDANO

A dedicated artist with a passion for painting, Isabel Baquedano (Mendavia, Navarre, 1929–Madrid, 2018) began her career in the early 1960s with a realistic figurative style, producing work that, without losing sight of the Pop art then in vogue, had a strong social background. Later, her painting would shift towards the symbolic, and urban landscapes and everyday reality gave way to themes and subjects from the classical world or from art history itself. She was a creator little known to the general public, although her work enjoyed early critical recognition. In 1957, she won a competitive examination for the position of Professor of Drawing at the School of Arts and Crafts in Pamplona, where she played an important role in teaching successive generations of artists from Navarre.

Extremely demanding in his work, he knew how to transcend his own technical skill and sought to push painting to its limits, confronting us in his paintings with the enigma of the nameless that dwells beyond the visible.

A co-production by the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Navarre, and the University of Navarre Museum, which can be visited simultaneously in Pamplona at both venues:
