Carmen Cortes

Carmen Cortés is one of the most prestigious dancers in Spanish dance today. She is recognized nationally and internationally for the expressive power of her hands, her footwork, and her figures. Her dancing is temperamental, fast, and furious; it is old-school flamenco dancing, with a very personal feeling and vision.

She defines herself essentially as a "bailaora" (flamenco dancer), but without renouncing other forms of creation within dance and theater, through a constant concern for renewal and the encounter between flamenco and other ways of understanding dance. Carmen's art has managed to combine a duality that is difficult to achieve in the world of contemporary flamenco. Her dance, while authentic and orthodox, coexists perfectly with the most innovative proposals, integrating seamlessly with elements far removed from the classic racial component, as well as with contemporary dance and jazz.

Her conception of dance is fiercely independent, always seeking creation. Flamenco conventions lose their rigidity with Carmen, molding themselves to her creativity but without omitting a single bit of their essence. Her dancing is elegant and sober, strong and fragile, delicately fierce, highly personal, with total dedication.
