Workshop : Writing short fiction with stories by Borges

A participatory workshop based on reading and carefully explaining texts by Borges. In addition, in line with each story, narrative techniques and resources for writing and composing stories will be discussed.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

Enjoying literature, especially the narrative works—and some poems—of Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986).

To understand Borgian works and the figure of the author.

Delve into the fundamentals of narrative writing resources.

Encourage and develop personal storytelling skills.

? Revive the vigor for writing.

Increase the ability to evaluate—and, in certain cases, even the ability to make reasoned judgments—literary works.

Strengthen reading autonomy: each person reads after the course.

Methodology: Presentation by the instructor and active participation by attendees. Reading during the session and reading preparation outside the classroom.

 

Program:

01 A strange story by Borges. Narrative technique: structure. What order and length should the story have?

02 Borges' themes. Time and memory. Narrative technique: the transmission of meaning. What to write about?

03 Borges, renowned and innovative short story writer. Narrative technique: the narrator's voice. Who is the narrator?

04 Stories about small objects. Narrative technique: the wisdom of detail, the skill of minutiae. Narrative conciseness.

05 Borges, pioneer of the microstory. Essential ways of writing microfiction.

06 Participatory recap: But have I learned anything? How can I move forward?                                                                                                      

 

Materials: Participants will be provided with annotated Borges stories, bibliography, and supplementary texts.

 

Duration: twelve hours (six 2-hour sessions)

Calendar: October 8, 15, 22, 29, and November 5 and 12

Schedule: Tuesdays from 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Speaker: Jose Luís González, associate professor in the Department of Journalism Projects at the University of Navarra's School of Communication, teaching courses on Journalistic Writing and Authorial Journalistic Genres.
