RENOVATED EXHIBITION SPACE
FROM APRIL 2024
The Ortiz Echagüe exhibition space has been revamped by two curators who are former students of the Master's Degree in Curatorial Studies, Agustina Marani and Andrea Ludeña. The selection of 28 works tells us about the photographer as a traveler who portrays places and anonymous people whom he dignifies with his camera. The exhibition is complemented by a screening about the life and photographic process of Ortiz Echagüe.
The result provides a window into traditional worlds and a way to glimpse into the human soul through the eyes of the people photographed, with images taken both in North Africa (El Siroco del Sahara, 1965) and in Spain: Cerros de Calatayud 3 (1935) from the series "Castillos y Alcázares"; Molina de Aragón (1935), from the series "Villages and Landscapes"; the portrait of the Monk of Guadalupe (undated), from the series "Mystical Spain"; and the Girl from Ibiza ( 1930), from the series "Types and Costumes." Ortiz Echagüe thus captures a world that seems to be on the verge of disappearing: popular traditions that may never be celebrated again, religious festivities, traditional costumes, landscapes, castles, fortresses, etc.
The exhibition also features works that are representative of the technical process and intervention used by the photographer: Basque Oarsman (1931) exemplifies the use of direct charcoal on Fresson paper, while Female Portrait (1906) and Rifian Boy (1910) show the use of scratching as a method of intervening in the image.
JOSÉ ORTIZ ECHAGÜE
José Ortiz Echagüe (Guadalajara, 1886 - Madrid, 1980) was a Spanish military engineer, pilot, and photographer. A highly influential figure in the history of photography in Spain, he has been internationally recognized as one of the best photographers. His dedication to photography was purely as an amateur, and in his role as an entrepreneur, he founded two major companies: Construcciones Aeronáuticas S.A. (C.A.S.A.) and later, Spain's first mass-production automobile manufacturer, SEAT.
